Position Summary: Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of design principles, practices, and implementation in complex systems and assignments. General responsibilities include design concept generation, participating in design reviews, development and testing to assess performance against design specifications; reliability testing, and assessment of system interactions. Makes independent decisions and assists in the development of manufacturing processes and troubleshooting issues to determine root cause and possible engineering solutions.

Designs, plans, and executes project-related tasks.
Designs and executes experiments to test hypotheses related to project outcomes.
Applies advanced scientific knowledge to projects; determines priorities for experiments.
Independently designs and executes experiments utilizing Design of Experiments (DOE) as appropriate.
Assures experimental quality through sound, independent, experimental design.
Participates or leads cross-functional technical teams.
Establishes interfaces across other organizational groups.
Provides technical direction and feedback to others.
Teaches others and troubleshoots problems.
Participates in project planning, process updates, and contributes to experimental design.
Prepares and delivers presentations of project results to others; presents data to larger and more diverse audiences.
Monitors work to ensure quality, continuously promoting Quality First Time.
Skills:
Proficient in SolidWorks, with knowledge of GD&T and plastics.
Preferred skills include Design for Manufacturability, Design for Reliability, and Design for Serviceability.
Excellent technical writing skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Ability to develop and articulate mechanical and instrument requirements based on customer needs and system architecture.
Ability to quickly formulate design solutions (Mechanical, Electro-Mechanical, etc.) to achieve requirements.
Hands-on capability to create useful prototypes to evaluate solution concepts.
Ability to create and evaluate trade-off criteria to select the best-suited concept to solve a particular problem.
Willingness to take feedback from team members and incorporate it into design improvements.
Willingness to delegate development and completion of design concepts to team members and provide meaningful constructive feedback.
Ability to interact with external design consultants, providing guidance, direction, and feedback to achieve project goals.
Ability to compile, document, and present design concepts and design history, rationale, and justification.
Ability to navigate (or learn to navigate) the PLM system for archiving design history.
Education and Experience:
BS degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 8 years of related experience.
OR, MS degree in a directly related discipline with 4 years of related experience.
OR, PhD degree in a directly related discipline with 2 years of related experience.
